07/04/12  KARACHI, The 10th Women Cycling Championship will be organised by Wapda in Lahore from 10th to 13th May.

All affiliated units of women cycling of Pakistan Cycling Federation (PCF) — all four provinces, FATA, Wapda, Railway, Sui Southern Gas and Pakistan Army — will participate in the Championship, secretary PCF Azhar Ali Shah told.

The decision to this effect was taken in the last meeting of Pakistan Cycling Federation (PCF) general body meeting.

Wapda is the defending champion of the event as Wapda’s women cyclists have always dominated the discipline. They have won eight championships out of nine. Raheela Bano, the current women cycling champion, belongs to Wapda.

Nine events will be held in the championship and the longest distance of the road team event will be 50 kilometer.

Each team will consist of six women cyclists. Pakistan won a silver medal in last South Asian Games in Bangladesh in the discipline.

In the meeting, it was also decided that before the national women cycling championship, Pakistan’s First Inter-Provincial Women Cycling Championship would be held in Peshawar on 8th and 9th May, the secretary said. All four provinces would take part in the championship, he said.

He said there would be no security issue in Peshawar as far as organisation of the event is concerned “as we have organised international cycling events when terrorism was at its peak in Peshawar in recent past”.

He further said that soon the final dates of 17th Tour De Pakistan would be announced which was postponed last month.

Meanwhile, Secretary Sindh Cycling Association (SCA) Javed Ahmed welcomed the decision of provincial sports department to develop the cycling veoldrom in Karachi, which was a longstanding demand of SCA.

He said that it would be a dream come true for Sindh-based cyclists who were compelled to practise on roads.

“It is great news not only for the provincial cyclists but also for entire cycling community of the country as the PCF and SCA would be in a position to organise cycling events,” Javed said.

He mentioned that there was a lot of talent in Sindh as the province had produced a number of champions.

He said that cyclists from the province had won at least three Tour De Pakistan Cycling Championships, three national cycling championships and the same number of national junior championships.

“After the development of velodrome, our cyclists would not have to go to Lahore for training and it will save our time and money,” he said.
