Injured Bond out of tests
DUNEDIN, Black Caps strike bowler Shane Bond has been ruled out of the test series against Pakistan.
An abdominal tear means he won't be backing up his first test heroics where his eight wickets set up New Zealand's victory.
Stuff.co.nz reported that an ultra-sound scan on Tuesday indicated Bond has a one-centimetre tear.
Team manager Dave Currie said that as a precaution Bond will be rested for the remainder of the Pakistan series. It is expected that he will fully recover in time for the international series against Bangladesh and Australia in the new year.
Bond, coming back to test cricket after a two year absence and with a history of injury problems had to carry a heavy bowling load in Dunedin.
He sent down 47.5 overs - more than any New Zealander - to take 8-153.
Bond's loss will be massive given the impact he added with his extra pace and bounce and he would have relished bowling down wind at the Basin reserve in Thursday's second test.
The New Zealand selectors are considering adding a replacement to the squad, probably Tim Southee.
Daryl Tuffey is already with the squad and could be in line for his first test cap in five years.
The loss of Bond comes after fellow pace bowler Iain O'Brien was cleared to play in the second test.
He had been in doubt after dislocating his middle finger during the win in Dunedin.
O'Brien saw a specialist in Wellington yesterday and x-rays confirmed there was no fracture.
